GEIGER VILLA
8 Simonyi Road, Debrecen
Sajó was commissioned to design this two-storey villa by wholesale dealer Dr
Pál Geiger. The articulated mass of the main façade allowed Sajó to design a
lively surface. Typical features of the building are its decorative plasterwork:
a horizontally divided, zigzag-profiled strip flanking the windows and a band
framing the main entrance. The zigzag motif of the ledge running along the
building is repeated on the cornices above the door and the windows. The
wooden Art Deco overlays of the front door are still in good condition, as is
the colourful stained glass design. The latter Art Deco glass art – unlike Art
Nouveau works – is an exceptional rarity in Hungary. The decorative quality
of the building continues on the horizontally-banded ziggurat design of the
chimney, while the wrought-iron roof grille above the cornice also fits elegantly
into the overall design.
A few years ago the building was expanded with a single-storey wing
symmetrically, in two directions, in which they preserved and adopted Sajó’s
characteristic style.
