RESIDENTIAL BUILDING ON
PETŐFI SQUARE
16-18 Petőfi Square
The 110-apartment residential building on Petőfi Square, a long ribbon-house
with a pitched roof, was built on the site of the bombed-out houses at the southern
end (towards the Main Railway Station) of the former Deák Ferenc Street. Ernő
Kálmán articulated the two sides of the façade facing the square with deeply
reticulated loggias and the middle storey with French balconies. Stretching
across the entire length of the ground floor is a row of shops corresponding
to the floor area of twenty apartments, while an arched canopy is placed in the
middle of the block.
Ernő Kálmán, whose career as an architect spanned almost seventy years, recalled
the process of designing the Petőfi Square ribbon-house by saying that as a
young architect he received a lot of support and advice from István Sajó, who was
the chief architect of Debrecen at the time.
Designer: Ernő Kálmán
Consultant: István Sajó, chief architect at the time
