The exhibition is all the more worth seeing because, although
Sajó’s buildings are considered as ‘basic knowledge’, even
residents of Debrecen may not necessarily be able to link them
to the architect. Now visitors can see who inserted a taste of
modernity into Debrecen – a city originally known for its Neo-
“
classical buildings – in the first half of the 20th century and then
in the first years after World War II.

Enlarged prints of archival photos and architectural plans on
extremely high walls guide us from sketches made on the drawing
board to decorative facades reaching for the sky. Besides these,
the stylised Art Deco motifs of the exhibition’s graphic design
evoke elements from Sajó’s iconic buildings. Highlighted with
well-defined contours, they lend the interiors elegance, while
creating a framework for the buildings revisited. “

We can see a fantastic documentary about the residents of “The
Coops” colony of New York City. Sajó participated in the design
of the building complex. Although this episode of social history is
at variance with the presentation of architectural history, drawing
attention to it is understandable. It is a mind-blowing story about
how a community of young left-wing Central European Jewish
immigrants tried to create an alternative society in a residential
area in the interwar period. “
