“A well-mannered gentleman always receptive to progressive thought” is how Tibor Mikolás
described István Sajó, who worked in Dortmund, New York and Florida, and then returned
home to Debrecen. He was a global citizen who brought the necessary openness and versatility
to the Great Plains. He cherished deep ties to his hometown, yet (following in the spirit of the
modern zeitgeist) his formal connection to the place did not provide the starting point for his
works. His world-class architectural projects drew on his international experience, yet they could
not have been built anywhere else and at any other time: they are irrevocably of Debrecen.”
